Before you begin there are a few things you should consider. There are some site designs that can make search engine optimization very difficult. If you have sites that use:
Frames
Dynamic URLS
Flash
Image Maps
JavaScript navigation
Generally try to stay away from these types of web sites. Sometimes there are special work-a-rounds.
Keywords and phrases that you select should be used throughout your web site content and added to several key HTML tags. Content is the most important part of optimizing your web site for search engines. The goal is to come up with 20 - 50 target phrases and keywords that you will use throughout your web site content.
Select the best keywords that your target audience would use to find your site. Ask your customers what words they would use to find you online.
Check out your competition for ideas. Using keywords you know you want to target use Google or MSN and click through some of the top sits. Once there view the HTML source and check out some of their content keywords or META tags keywords. This will give you some more ideas.
You want to end up with about 20-50 keywords and phrases.
When you have your keywords organized. Start placing your keywords throughout your content.
Title Tag: Your title tag is of great importance to search engines. Make sure you title tag contains your most popular keywords. We recommend between 50-80 characters including spaces.
Search engines usually use the title tag as title of your listing search results. Use something enticing.
Meta Tag: Your Meta tag is not nearly as important as your title tag but still needs to be utilized. Try to keep you Meta keywords no longer than 1024 characters including spaces. Try to keep your Meta description no longer than 250 characters including spaces.
Be careful not to repeat your keywords excessively, this could be seen as keyword stuffing and can actually reduce your page ranking.
Alt Attribute: Images can help your search engine ranking. Each image on your webpage has an ALT attribute, be sure to include a keyword sentence inside this space.
Be sure to use keywords in your alt attribute. Try to keep your keywords under 2-3 per image.
Page copy is almost as important as you Title tag. Search engines read you copy the same way a visitor would read it to figure out what your company does.
Each page copy should have a least 200 words in it. Your most important keywords should be mixed in well within these 200 + words. Use your phrases you came up with during your keyword and phrase selection step.
Organize the information in a personalized email template so that the information is clear, understandable and represents your company identity.
Keywords stuffing: Cramming all of your keywords into html tags. Follow the maximum character settings above. Do not use keyword stuffing.
Doorway pages: Doorway pages are highly optimized keywords and phrase which just re-direct your visitors to your real website. Do not use doorway pages.
Hidden Text or links: Do not list keywords and phrases in the same colour as the background to try and hide them.
